1998 196 lb 8pt Maine Buck .
Shot it on Weds of the 3rd week. We had 3 nice bucks on the game pole at camp that year.
Took pictures with one of those disposable cameras and they never came out.
Got back on Sat late afternoon and the deer went to the butcher Sun morning.

Amazing, especially considering it looks the shot was right at him, face on. Did you find any pellets anywhere else on his body? Great buck.

Who the hell in Maine is using buckshot??? I suppose there are “desperate” snap shooters everywhere...

Lots of people in Maine hunt close quarters with shotguns, both slugs and buckshot, I know my dad started me off that way.

I can see slugs, especially today’s slugs are more than adequate to kill efficiently, however, I don’t believe buckshot in any form was ever a “quick kill” round (unless a lucky piece of shot pierced an artery or major organ)
The fact that the buck in the picture had one embedded in a non lethal place, again, EXCEPT FOR A LUCKY HIT proves this.
In the old days I agree, we used whatever we had on hand and that included the round of 00 Buck as a follow up round to chance a hit anywhere on the animal in hopes a blood trail could be initiated...
Is this still practiced in this day and age?
