Recent years when hunting late flintlock/archery season here in Pa. I find where deer have pawed ground to the dirt and apparently eating roots I believe but not sure.See this quite often this time of year.Sometimes it is in areas of high fern growth and sometimes not so much.Find it on logging roads pipelines.Not sure what exactly it is their feeding on other than some type of root of different kinds.Any thoughts?

Food is not as abundant this time of year. I don't see why they wouldn't eat roots or anything else that they can find by pawing down into the forest floor.
