Back in December Mainer4570 gifted me the book, The Still Hunter. Written by Theodore Van Dyke in the late 1800’s it’s full of tips and techniques still applicable to deer hunting today. The writing style is different, it took me a couple of months to get thru it, as I could only do a few pages at a time lol. Now that I’m finished I’d gladly pass it along to anyone here that would like it. PM me your name and address and I’ll get it in the mail to you. Thanks again Mainer4570!

VanDyke was a genius. That book is full of hidden gems.

The thing that hit home to me the most were his references to looping out around terrain when tracking a deer or group of deer. It’s something I know I should do when the time and conditions are right, I just don’t do it often enough!

I love the shooting tips. How when you jump a deer you don’t snap your rifle up fast, you raise it slowly and deliberately and take a well aimed calculated shot. Or when estimating distance of a deer always go with your lowest estimate and don’t aim over the top of the deer. I think that’s why I killed that one this year I thought he was 300 yards or more but I still didn’t aim over his back and I killed him. He was only 200 yards.
