Damn ticks!
I’ve been hunting the same area since 1994, and I would say there are more moose there than ever. But who knows.
I saw 30 moose this year and 2 deer during this years hunt.

95% more hunters over the last 5 years
62% were successful overall
36% success on the adaptive hunt (18% first week, 17% second, 40% November)

The logic of the wildlife biologists, as I understand it is this. The ticks survive, and thrive, because the moose population is too high, too many moose per square mile. The solution, at least to the biologists in VT, is to reduce densities to <1 moose/square mile by annually adjusting the number of permits. I get the approach, and generally support it. The anti crowd’s solution is to stop the hunt and let the ticks naturally reduce the numbers. I’d rather not see that happen for a bunch of reasons, all bad in my opinion!

Our F&G has suspended the hunt in central zones. I'm not a fan in the least bit. I can't for the life of me wrap my head around why they can't issue one "bull only" permit for those zones. The moose are there, and quite a few at that. I understand not harvesting calves and cows. But one bull only in a massive amount of square mile area? Really? That's what's going to decimate the population? I can't speculate that it's playing to the anti hunting crowds hand. I would absolutely hope not and pray that's not the case. I honestly believe our biologists are much better than that, but I still disagree adamantly with the decision over the past two seasons.

I would like to think that the beneficial biological data of the moose harvested would outweigh any detrimental effects of one less moose out spreading seed.
