I think MT voters would pass a ballot initiative to end all non resident big game hunting. After all of the shady legislative efforts I feel like this would be the ultimate F you to outfitters, absentee landowners and basically everyone who has tried to strip away what little we have left. Who up for some signature gathering? Any lawyers in the house?



And no this isnt a, joke there are, quite a, few, on the websight i pasted this from that actually think this is A REAL GOOD IDEA

I think all it really proves is every hunting forum is stocked with people that have dumb ideas. Over the years this site hasn’t been vacant of the same.

“5 point on one side rules, shut the seasons down for 3 years so the deer can grow and big bucks would be more plentiful, don’t kill any does, kill more does”, and the list goes on.

I’ve tried several times to figure out just how to get a deer tag in Montana. My impression is that the MT Parks & Wildlife website was designed by a member of the faction that wants to keep NRs out! Had to be.

Sure why not do that...... As long as all Montana residents agree that big game tags to hunt on federal land are distributed equally among residents and non-residents.

I think folks there and other places out west tend to forget that a huge proportion of the game they are harvesting come from federally owned land. The fact that they get preferential access in the first place is a real benefit to them. Its greed if you ask me.

Seems like a tough sell. I'm sure some of the MT resident hunters would vote for it but from a state government position they'd loose tons of money and money = votes. Just in the non resident permits alone. 17K permits (I think that's the curernt cap?) at just over 1K a piece assuming all non residents buy the combo permit, puts the state at a 17 million dollar loss. Let alone the money that those 17K non resident hunters spend while they're out there.

I agree with what you’re saying MS, but “greed” knows no bounds it seems when talking about hunting. Doesn’t matter if it’s guides in Maine, outfitters in the mid west or surveyors posting land they don’t own in NH. Sadly…. It’s everywhere .

Maybe the fella from the original post would pick up that cost? Or they could just raise the cost of a Montana license by a couple hundred percent?

He is, just a, pissed off self centered ego tripping resident that isnt happy because
He thinks, non resisents & outfitters are responsible for ranchers not allowing him
Access i guess he doesnt think private property rights should exsist and he shoud be allowed to hunt anywhere he wants
To be fair there were a, lot of comments, from a few, resdents, (defending. Non residents) that told him where he could stick his idea

You see this on a lot of state pages. Hunters bashing, not wanting, wanting to ban out of staters. It's "very common" actually. I've seen it in New England state hunting groups. It's even more common than 200 lb bucks in Maine.

I read the first 2 pages of the 15 page thread. THere were more people bashing him than anything else.

This is what happens when killing wildlife becomes big business and profit driven. The little guys (just the regular resident and non resident hunter) squabble for the leftovers. Scrap all the landowner preferences and guaranteed outfitter tags, and you might have a fair playing field.

Well, I drew my Montana elk general tag, so unless I get real lucky and draw a NM tag, it’s off to Montana in September. My buddy, who also had points, did not get a tag, but still plans on coming along for the adventure.

That'll be a fun trip. How many points did your buddy have? Preference or bonus points? I have a 2023 Montana trip in the works. All involved should have 3 preference points by then so I don't expect drawing will be an issue. I hope.

I had two preference points going in and no bonus. My buddy had one preference and one bonus, and bought another preference points towards the draw and still nothing. Also just found out that I didn’t get a NM tag.

We applied to MT as a group for a NR Deer Combo. We had each bought a pref point last summer and bought a 2nd pref point with our application. We drew the tag.

I was in the same boat. From the odds I had seen 2 points was a pretty safe bet.

No kidding, and I told him to email fish and game to see what the heck is going on. He’s tech savvy, so I don’t think he effed up the application, but the Montana system absolutely sucks.
