I have a 12 year Golden, Buddy who is starting to fail.
He was a great hunter and a better friend.
Doesn't have the strength needed to upland hunt anymore.
He gives 1000%, goes for hours, but then is crippled for days after we get back.
I made a very hard decision, not to take him this year.

My wife, loves the dog but hates the mess.
For the past year or so, whenever there was mud or hair on the floor, I'd hear "No more FN dogs after he goes!"
Got to be a standing joke, but I agreed. No more dogs.

A few weeks ago, I was getting ready for a hunt.
Placed my stuff on the basement floor and started packing the truck.
I came back in to find my golden had dragged my vest and hat up the stairs and was politely positioned on top.
Broke my heart.

Fast forward to two weeks before Christmas.
Wife and daughter pulled into the garage with an early Christmas surprise.

Meet FN Dog (Who we prompty and appropriately renamed Moose! )

Took him out yesterday for the first time to see how he was with other dogs and gun fire.
Looking good so far.
He had fun and slept for 6 hours after we got back!

very nice
As to the old guy take some birds and hide them in the yard or a nice flat field and let him "find" 1-3 of them he'll think he's hunting and be happy
