NH,

I have not had a chance to get any pictures of the trees but one is a little behind the others. I know it is because there are some oaks blocking it from getting the same about of sun as the others. Hopefully next month someone will come over and help me fall them to open up the area.

Exojam,

They are looking very good. The only thing I would do now is on the last one. For some reason the top bud (just above the yellow tape) on this tree did not take off. The bud below that did take off and wants to be the main leader so I would take the clothes pin off it and let it take off. It should start growing back upright.

Once it hardens off ( turns from the soft green to more brown) then you could take some jute string and gently pull it more upright if it doesn't pop back up.

NH,

Thanks for the suggestion. That tree happens to be the one that gets the least amount of sun. Hopefully within the next two weeks the oaks blocking it from getting more sun should be gone.

I will remove the pin today.

NH,

Just so I am clear is it the first or second pin that I should remove? The first pin has the smaller branch while the second has the bigger one (but under ther the first branch).

I have not seen any signs of any bugs on them but I will have to look up what that beetle looks like to make sure some are not sneaking around.

Yes, I'm sorry it would be the second one so that long branch on the left side grows up. Next winter you would prune off the section just above it so that the energy goes into that limb.

NH,

No need to apologize, you have been a great help to me in getting these guys up and going and I do appreciate that.

I will pull that pin shortly and than before winter sets in I will clip the section above.

Exojam,

Any updates or photos? I'm guessing your branch angles should be set now.

If the ends of the branches are starting to go out and upwards you can remove the clothes pin from the original spots and try clipping them further out on the end of the branches to get them out straighter.

No new photos, I can try and get some soon. the branches (some) are like you describe so I will move the pins.

Some leafs do have a yellowish/orange spots on them though which I am not sure what it is. I also saw some ants crawling over one of the trees the other day and I was not sure if I should spray some seven on it so I let it be.

What seems strange is the lower branches are not growing nearly as fast as the top ones.

Yes. Those little spots are called cedar apple rust. The trees you have are resistant to it. That's why it's important to buy/plant disease resistant trees. It can kill non resistant trees. It's caused by red cedars. White cedars do not cause it. In the mid west where red cedars are prevalent it can cause major problems on non resistant trees. Yours should be ok.

NH,

Sounds good and thanks for the reply and information.

I still have to move some of the pins and should have that down within the week, just have others items higher up the priority list right now.

So I found that some Japanese beetles having to much fun on one of my trees so I had to hit them with one of the item NH mentioned above.

I hope I did not use to much of the stuff since it was a concentrate and I did not have a measuring item with me to use. I will keep an eye on them and see how it goes.
