All my gear is packed and I will be heading up to camp in Northern Maine tomorrow with my regular hunting partner. Looks like some colder weather for next week and maybe even a little snow. I'm bring three rifles, 7600 35 Whelen, 141 35 Remington, and Browning Bar carbine. We'll see which one brings me luck! Hopefully I will update this thread with pics of a big buck.
Good luck to all those venturing forth in the next couple weeks and be safe, talk to you soon. No signal up where we are so will update when I get back.
UPDATE:
Had cold weather and 8 inches of fluffy snow all week. Tracked and passed a small 8 early in the week. On the buck I shot, I picked up a track after about a 1/2 mile loop and then tracked him about 4 miles down into a little ravine bordered by a clear cut. I stopped by a tree and looked down into the cut and saw the buck come out of the ravine and across the back of the cut. Looked pretty decent so I took a shot that I figured was about 250 yards. Leaned up against a tree, placed the crosshairs on his spine and touched off the 35 Whelen 7600, sending a 225 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullet his way. He spun at the shot and went into a pine plantation. Went right after him because it was snowing again(and I had a rifle and snow
), and found a bed and then after another 20 yards the buck. Had a 20 yard drag to the back of a gravel pit to get him out.
Buck weighed in at 202 pounds.
The next day my friend hit a buck that he jumped at 50 yards. He must have short stroked his 7600 pump and had a double feed, unable to get another shot at the deer right out in the open. Tracked that buck for the last two days and 12 miles. All his legs were working fine and no more blood. We figured a brisket shot or a low shot. Some smeared blood in his bed when he layed down. He saw the buck again, just a brown patch, but couldn't ID what he saw until it was to late for a shot. Saw some real nice tracks and got one photo of a nice one. Once again the monsters eluded us, but we got one nice one.
Pic of a big one, my shot across the cut(pic taken from the deer to me, red dot) and night time camp visitor. Also, moose were everywhere, saw over 30 in the woods and 10 more from the road. z5.
Looking forward to next year already!
