The first hunts of the season have begun. Word has it that the deer wintered well and should be a great season. For someone still pondering booking a hunt, I just noticed 6 cancellations at Galiote for the week of Nov 20th. I don't know if this is a misprint or what, but if I already wasn't booked, I'd be all over it. The openings won't last very long. Shoot straight boys, there will be stories to be told.

From what I know of hunting in Canada from here in the USA I would have to sign my life away to bring just one rifle into Canada.

Maybe ammo is not allowed. Then I think you have to pay a guide to hunt there?

They don't speak english either.

Wrong on all accounts unless you're a convicted felon or had a DUI.

If you're legal then you fill out a form and pay a nominal fee at the border. Ammo is fine. The guides at Anticosti speak better English than a high percentage of people now living in this country.

We were at the border inside the Canadian building once checking in the paperwork when a car with two young kids went through without stopping. Picture one guy waiting on the four of us. The other were reading newspaper or trying to act busy. Alarms went off. Six officers jump over the counter with guns drawn run outside and surround the car. They talk to them for a minute let them go. They then come back inside like nothing ever happened. The guy continued waiting on us where he left off and the others went back to reading.

In six years of going up there they never once physically looked at our guns.

I really never had any problem driving across the border. Most of the officers have been actually very helpful. I'm sure it could go the other way quickly if you were up to something. One time I actually saw a truck driver unloading all of his xmas trees. Not sure what that was about....

I went up this weekend for the first time with my enhanced drivers license, and it literally took about 20 seconds to cross. I didn't have any firearms, but that license seemed to really help.

Apparently you don't know.

We have to remember that Canada is a sovereign nation with it's own laws of the land. I know many of us in the US are more accustomed to a greater degree of freedom when it comes to firearms but that isn't the case in Canada. If someone is planning to hunt Canada then they need to obey Canada's laws. I may think that their laws are draconian but if I want to hunt that nation I need to comply.
